I learn lessons really well the hard way.
My camera with preferred holiday lens attached is heavy. Believing that between the padded camera case and the suitcase it would be well protected from rough shod handling by airline baggage handlers, I stowed my expensive photographic equipment in my checked luggage. I’m lucky it was only the UV filter that smashed.
In the local shopping mall we found a camera shop and unbelievably it was staffed by photographers, not just retail assistants. The store owner removed the ring of the smashed filter from the lens, then proceeded to teach me polarising filter 101. Sure it means he made sales, but I think the attached photos will attest to the difference that highest quality filters make to definition and contrast.
I’ll carry my camera in my hand luggage in future.

I'm trying to keep a log of all the things we cook which taste really lovely. You know what it's like: you tweak and tweak a recipe until it's barely recognisable and then wonder how you used to make it. And it will also save a lot of time and bits of paper when it comes to sharing those recipes with friends.
Make me smile!

Beautiful photos indeed. But, thank goodness summer is over.
Is it cooler there today?
Yessss!
Beautiful photos!
Thanks you, gorgeous subject matter
Whew, I would never pack a camera. Always keep it with you at all times. And it’s true about polarising filters. They’re amazing, especially in strong sunlight.
I upgraded both a UV and polarising filter because of the breakage. The difference in clarity is significant.
Yikes! Good to know! Beautiful photos.
I did hesitate, but it worked out well in the end. I upgraded the quality of two filters because of the breakage and I’m thrilled about the result.
Beautiful!
Thanks!
