Winter is whale watching time on the east, west and southern coastlines of Australia. The Southern Right Whale migrates from Antarctica to calve close to the southern coast line of the continent, while their close relation, the Humpback Whale travels north to warm tropical waters to give birth and nourish the young before returning to Antarctica for the southern summer.
I’m always excited to see whales. We often see them from the beach, frolicking along southern coast, but having the chance to see them up close from a boat is an opportunity too good to pass up.
The warm waters of the Indian Ocean off Broome are about as far north as the 30,000 strong population of western Humpback Whales travel. Yesterday’s Sunset Whale Watching Cruise with Absolute Ocean Charters out of Broome, provided my best whale watching experience ever.
After several low key encounters, the boat’s deck hand spotted a calf breaching. The boat approached, staying well outside the 100 metre exclusion zone. Closely watched by Mum, we lost count of the number of times the youngster threw himself joyously in the air, then crashed belly up back into the sea.
