Iron ore mining dominates the Pilbara region.
The first thing you notice is the rich red iron ore dust. Every second vehicle on the road is a dirty white 4WD vehicles emblazoned with high visibility strips, identifying radio call numbers and dune flags. Unisex fashion on the street is steel capped work boots and navy blue drill trousers and shirts. There are temporary villages with swimming pools, tennis courts, and football fields for the fly in fly out workforce dotted regularly along the wide well maintained roads and it’s inevitable that you’ll have to stop at a railway crossing for a 3.7 kilometre long train hauling crushed iron ore to the seaport, en route to the world for steel manufacture.
Visit either Tom Price or Newman where the big mining companies, Rio Tinto, BHP and Fortescue centre their mining operations and you can see first hand the vast size of their open cut mines. Everything is big about this industry, the ore deposits, the open cut mines, the machinery, the profits.
