Experiencing the visual splendour of multicoloured coral reef teeming with a myriad of rainbow coloured fish is chicken soup for the soul. Coral reef snorkelling never leaves the top of my bucket list, my appetite will never be sated.
The World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef offers superb snorkelling sites, but you need the services of an expensive charter to reach the reef, or be holed up at a luxurious 5 star resort to gain easy access. Ningaloo Reef on the other hand is a fringing reef which means it’s accessible straight off the pristine white sandy beach. Access to the remotely situated Ningaloo Marine Park is by car, and I’m there.
The coral forests, variously shaped and coloured, offer shelter food and camouflage to fish both large and small. Five hundred species of fish are known to inhabit Ningaloo. Today as I drifted at Turquoise Bay schools of tiny electric blue fish darted past as if dancing to a marine world symphony, and a 35cm parrot fish audibly gnawed at the coral all the while protecting her young. All the characters from the movie “Finding Nemo” were represented, (except Bruce the shark and Nemo himself), fish striped and spotted in every vibrant colour of the rainbow and configured with fins, tails and body shapes of outrageous geometric shapes.
At times I felt as if I was swimming in a tropical aquarium.
